How to choose a watch size

A good fit is not determined by case diameter alone. Case length, shape, thickness and strap range all matter.

Dimensions that matter

Case width is normally measured without the crown. Case length shows how much space the watch occupies across the wrist and can matter more for comfort than diameter alone.

Thickness affects whether a watch fits under a sleeve. Strap width and fitting range determine whether it closes comfortably and how substantial the complete watch looks.

How to recognise the right size

There is no universal women’s or men’s size. A smaller case looks more subtle and a larger one more prominent; the right choice depends on wrist width, case shape and personal style.

If the lugs extend beyond the edges of the wrist or the strap cannot hold the case steadily, the watch will usually be too large.

Choosing a watch as a gift

The most reliable method is to measure a watch the recipient already wears. A photo of it on the wrist and the wrist circumference also help.

Check the clasp type and the minimum and maximum strap length as well as the case dimensions whenever those details are available.

Measure your wrist

Use a flexible tape or a piece of string at the position where you normally wear a watch. Do not pull it tight.

Compare dimensions

Measure the case width, case length and strap of a watch that already fits you well, then compare them with the product specifications.

Consider the shape

The same diameter can look different on the wrist. Long lugs, a narrow bezel or a square case make a watch appear larger.
